Tornadoes aren’t all that uncommon this time of year, especially in the deep south where abundant moisture is nearby. A tornado outbreak, however, is quite uncommon. Now some may not agree that what happened today should be considered a tornado outbreak, but based on multiple reports of extensive damage and several videos of large tornadoes in MO, AR, IL, and MS I consider this to be a tornado outbreak, especially for this time of year.
Above are the storm reports so far for today. Keep in mind that 31 tornado reports
does NOT mean there were 31 separate tornadoes.
There have been at least 6 fatalities from the tornadoes in AR and MO and many more have been injured. Based on preliminary reports and radar mosaics, it appears that approximately 6 separate tornadoes touched down earlier today in MO and IL (possibly more). One of these tornadoes (the one that touched down in Sunset Hills) may have been larger than an EF-3, according to preliminary NWS evaluations. More will be known over the coming days as to the strength of all the tornadoes.

Early this morning a couple of tornadoes touched down in northeast OK and northwest AR out ahead of the cold front. The first tornado resulted in significant damage in the towns of Cincinnati in Washington County Arkansas and Westville in Adair County Oklahoma. This tornado has been rated an EF3 with peak winds of about 140 mph. Three fatalities were reported in Cincinnati along with extensive mobile home, brick home, and outbuilding damage. Debris from this tornadic supercell was reported as far away as 30 miles to the northeast!
Another potentially tornadic supercell intensified across southern Adair County around 6:15 am and tracked across central and northeastern Washington County. This storm eventually moved into Carroll County around 7:30 am. More will be known about this potential tornado in the next couple of days.
Multiple tornado warnings were issued in LA today, but as of now there have been no reports of tornadoes. At least one tornado has touched down in MS (likely more). This tornado prompted Jackson, MS to declare a Tornado Emergency earlier this evening. More will be known about this tornado after the NWS surveys the damage tomorrow.
The tornado threat will continue through the night in the states of MS and AL. Tomorrow the threat will be confined to the FL panhandle and southern AL.
